Understanding the Unexpected Journey of Becoming a Writer

When I was younger, I never imagined that one day I would call myself an author. My plan was simple: become a registered nurse, continue my education, advance my career, and spend my life helping others through healthcare. Like many people, I had a clear vision of what my future would look like. However, life has a way of rewriting our plans when we least expect it.
Many people experience moments when their carefully crafted plans no longer fit the reality of their lives. Sometimes our goals change. Sometimes our circumstances change. Sometimes we discover strengths and passions that we never knew existed. While those changes can be difficult to accept, they can also lead us to places we never anticipated.
I first began writing books over twenty years ago, but life became busy with work, responsibilities, and everyday challenges. It wasn’t until October 2024 that I seriously returned to writing. By that point, writing had become more than a hobby or a creative outlet. It had become one of the few things I could consistently do, enjoy, and find meaning in. What began as a return to an old passion slowly transformed into an important part of my life.
What Writing Has Taught Me
Writing books has taught me lessons that extend far beyond storytelling itself. It has taught me patience when scenes do not come together as planned. It has taught me the importance of research and the value of paying attention to details. It has taught me consistency, discipline, and perseverance. Writing requires creating entire worlds—towns, cities, businesses, landmarks, and communities. Every character needs a name, age, personality, purpose, and history. Maintaining continuity throughout a story requires organization, dedication, and countless notes to ensure that every detail remains consistent from beginning to end.
More importantly, writing has given me something I did not realize I needed: purpose. It has allowed me to explore emotions, experiences, relationships, and questions about life that might otherwise remain unspoken. Through writing, I have discovered not only stories but also parts of myself.
How Writing Changed My Life
Returning to writing taught me that creativity is not simply about producing books. It is about growth, learning, and resilience. Every story requires problem-solving, critical thinking, emotional understanding, and persistence. Writing has strengthened my ability to research, organize complex information, remain consistent over long projects, and continue moving forward even when progress feels slow.
Most importantly, writing has given me a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment during challenging seasons of life. Each completed chapter, each finished manuscript, and each published work represents not only creativity but also perseverance.
Conclusion
Looking back, becoming a writer was never part of my original plan. Yet sometimes the paths we never intended to travel become the ones we were always meant to find. Life does not always unfold according to our expectations, and perhaps that is not a failure at all. Sometimes unexpected plans become unexpected gifts.
Today, I continue to write because writing brings meaning, purpose, creativity, and hope into my life. I will continue telling stories for as long as I have stories left to tell. And for that unexpected journey, I am deeply grateful.
“Sometimes the life we planned steps quietly aside so we can discover the life we were meant to create.”
