As writers, we often believe we’re in control of every chapter. We build outlines, develop characters, assign personalities, and imagine how every scene will unfold. At least, that’s the plan. Before You Remember Me reminded me that sometimes the best stories have plans of their own. Originally, this novel wasn’t supposed to become a psychological thriller. It was meant to be a romantic mystery—something with emotional depth, intriguing secrets, and a touch of suspense. I spent time developing the main cast, creating character profiles, assigning ages, personalities, relationships, and carefully considering each person’s purpose within the story. Everything seemed perfectly organized. Then I wrote the prologue. Something didn’t feel right.

When a Psychological Thriller Finds Its Own Voice

After finishing the opening chapter, I stepped away and reconsidered everything. The foundation was there, but the story lacked the intensity I was looking for. So I started over. I rewrote the synopsis, introduced several new characters, adjusted a few storylines, and believed I had finally found the right direction. Then something unexpected happened.

Instead of writing the romantic mystery I had planned, my imagination began taking me somewhere entirely different. Scene after scene unfolded naturally. New twists appeared without warning. Hidden motives emerged. Characters became far more complicated than I had intended. Every day seemed to introduce another surprise.

Before long, I wasn’t writing the book I had outlined. I was writing a psychological thriller. And I loved every minute of it.

Twenty Characters, Countless Secrets, and Endless Possibilities

One of the biggest surprises was watching the cast continue to grow. The original outline contained a manageable group of characters. By the time the manuscript was complete, Before You Remember Me featured twenty unique characters, each serving a purpose within the mystery. Some protected secrets. Others unknowingly carried pieces of the truth. Several became suspects, while a few quietly influenced the story from the background.

Developing so many personalities wasn’t overwhelming—it was exciting. Each conversation revealed another clue. Each chapter uncovered another layer.

As the mystery deepened, I found myself eager to sit down every morning and discover what would happen next. There were moments when even I didn’t immediately know where the next chapter would lead. That’s one of the greatest joys of writing fiction.

Sometimes you’re not simply creating a story. Sometimes you’re discovering it.

Why Before You Remember Me Became One of My Favorite Books

I’ve written many novels across different genres, and every one has taught me something about storytelling. But Before You Remember Me surprised me in ways I never expected. It challenged my creativity, pushed me beyond my original outline, and reminded me that imagination doesn’t always follow a straight path. The story became darker, more suspenseful, and far more psychologically complex than I had envisioned.

Looking back, I’m grateful I chose to listen instead of forcing the novel to remain what I originally planned. Sometimes the best creative decisions come from allowing a story to become exactly what it wants to be. And in this case, that journey led to one of my favorite novels I’ve ever written.
