Trace Zero began just two months after I learned that my ex-boyfriend had passed away. This story was inspired by real-life events but is fictionalized. My ex-boyfriend worked in IT. He was intelligent, complicated, and often difficult to fully understand.

Like many people drawn to that field, his mind operated on a level that was both impressive and, at times, distant. There was depth there—layers that weren’t always easy to reach. I didn’t sit down intending to write Trace Zero. Trace Zero was an extremely complex system. But emotions have a way of finding their way into stories.

Julian Rowe: A Character Built on Complexity

Julian Rowe is not a real person. He is entirely fictional. But like many characters, he was shaped by real observations, experiences, and questions I carried with me. Julian represents the kind of mind that is sharp, analytical, and deeply complex. The kind of person who can understand systems, patterns, and logic with precision—but may struggle when it comes to emotional connection. That contrast fascinated me.

IT is not a simple field. It requires intense focus, problem-solving, and a way of thinking that not everyone is drawn to. I’ve always believed that brilliant minds often gravitate toward it. But brilliance doesn’t always come with simplicity. Sometimes, it comes with distance, intensity, and complexity. That’s where Julian lives. He is layered. He is complicated. And while he is fictional, the emotions behind his character are very real.

In contrast to Julian, Isabel Quinn brings heart to the story. She is compassionate, grounded, and deeply resilient. Part of Trace Zero is rooted in a place that left a lasting impression on me: Columbus, Ohio. I spent about six months in Columbus, and during that time, I experienced something I’ll never forget. I met incredible people. I worked with patients who were facing some of the hardest battles of their lives—they were fighting cancer.

And yet, even in those moments, there was strength. There was kindness. There was humanity. Those experiences stayed with me. They shaped how I see people. And they shaped how I write them.

Trace Zero is a work of fiction. The characters are imagined. The story is created.

But the emotion behind it is real. This book draws from:
