Why My Stories Don’t Let You Get Comfortable—and Why That Matters

Why My Stories Don’t Let You Get Comfortable

When readers pick up a book, they have certain expectations. They want to immerse themselves in a narrative, follow engaging characters, and trust the journey ahead. They seek an emotional connection that’s powerful yet manageable, craving tension while feeling secure. However, my writing defies this comfort. Why my stories don't let you get comfortable is important to me as a writer.

My stories reflect a fundamental truth: real life is not comfortable or predictable. People experience a complex range of emotions, and I embrace that chaos in my narratives, keeping readers alert and engaged without allowing them to settle into an easy rhythm.

My Characters Don’t Just Exist—They Decide

My characters aren’t just written to move a plot forward. They exist inside the story with a kind of freedom. They think, hesitate, react, and choose based on who they are—not what would make the story easier or cleaner.

That means they don’t always do the “right” thing. They don’t always make decisions that make sense at first. But they make human decisions.

And that’s where discomfort begins—because readers aren’t just watching anymore. They’re trying to understand, predict, and sometimes even question those choices.

Perfection Isn’t Real—And It’s Not Interesting

Flawless characters have never intrigued me. When someone appears too perfect, it often hides deeper complexities—a need to compensate for past struggles, control their surroundings, or prove their worth after enduring hardship.

In my writing, I emphasize that perfection is rarely a strength; more often, it's a survival mechanism. My characters may seem composed on the surface, but beneath that veneer lies a rich tapestry of conflict and vulnerability, revealing the tumultuous inner worlds they navigate.

You See Yourself—Even When You Don’t Want To

The reason my stories keep you on your toes and prevent you from settling into comfort is quite straightforward: they evoke a sense of recognition in you. Perhaps it's a familiar setting, a relatable character, or an experience that resonates deeply. You find yourself drawn in by an echo of something from your own life, something that stirs both curiosity and unease.

My characters capture the complexities of real human behavior, showcasing everyday interactions and the unspoken struggles that often go unnoticed. They embody the contradictions we all face, reacting in ways that feel genuine rather than predictable.

When readers see reflections of themselves in these characters, the story becomes more than just a narrative; it becomes a deeply personal experience that resonates with their lives.

Discomfort Creates Impact

Comfort is a fleeting sensation, one that can easily slip through your fingers. In contrast, discomfort lingers like an unwelcome guest, forcing you to halt your thoughts and reflect deeply. It compels you to revisit moments long after the final page has turned, echoing in your mind. My aim in crafting stories isn't to lead you gently through a pleasant journey from start to finish; rather, I seek to evoke raw emotions and challenges that prompt introspection.

Why It Matters

Tales that resonate deeply are a pleasure to immerse oneself in, effortlessly guiding the reader through their pages. Yet, it is the narratives that mirror reality—rich with raw emotions and genuine experiences—that etch themselves into our memories, making them nearly impossible to forget. If a thread of my writing continues to echo in your thoughts—be it a pivotal choice made by a character or a fleeting moment that feels hauntingly familiar—it’s a sign that the story has truly captured your imagination.

Final Thought

My characters are deeply flawed and shaped by their experiences, carrying the weight of their pasts and fighting to survive. This unpredictability fuels the narrative, ensuring it unfolds in surprising ways. My stories are not meant to offer comfort; instead, they aim to evoke powerful emotions and challenge you to confront life's raw truths, leaving a lasting impression long after you finish reading.
